Armwrestling's Biggest Prize Money Tournaments - 1972 to Present
One of the most effective ways for an event to attract top-level talent is by offering cash prizes. Prestigious titles and non-monetary awards can be alluring, but nothing talks like money talks. In looking through organized armwrestling’s history, it’s interesting to see the various organizations and tournaments that captivated fans and competitors alike over the years. The following is a look at the events that featured the biggest cash prize purses each year, dating back to 1972. Specifically, the name, date, and location of each year’s biggest cash prize event, as well as a list of the event champions (where known).
An Overview of the Top Cash Tournament Timeline
The first major armwrestling tournament known to have offered cash prizes was the Carling World Wristwrestling Championships, held in Timmins, Ontario, Canada, in May 1972. Seeing the Petaluma World’s Wristwrestling Championship (WWC) on TV inspired Fred Salvador (a Director of Parks and Recreation in Timmins, Ontario, Canada) to organize a major annual tournament. He stepped things up by offering cash prizes to competitors – something that the WWC didn’t start doing until 1975.
Steve Simons was another fan who was influenced by the WWC. He was of the opinion that there was a ton of potential to grow the sport, so he formed the World Professional Armwrestling Association (WPAA) in 1974. The WPAA organized a massive tournament in late 1974 that attracted most of the top pullers from across the US. While the event in Timmins was far from California and aired only on Canadian television, the WPAA event was held in Los Angeles and garnered quite a bit of attention. In fact, it practically forced the WWC to start offering cash prizes to competitors. Between 1975 and 1979, the WWC and the WPAA offered comparable sums of cash at their world events, though the WPAA always gave just a bit more.
The very early ‘80s were great years to be a successful armwrestler. Tournaments offering 5-figure cash prize purses were more common at that time than they would be over the following 30 years! Arm Wrestling International was running several tournaments each year, offering big purses and national television coverage. Jerry Herson, a Honda dealership owner from Maryland, came on as a major sponsor for the AAA and his involvement led to two massively successful big-money AAA Stand-Up Nationals in 1980 and 1981. But despite the huge prizes offered at these events, another organization put up even more money for individual tournaments: the Chicago-based International Wristwrestling Club (IWC). These events, combined with the World Championships put on by the WWC, the WPAA, and the World Professional Wristwrestling Association (WPWA) allowed top pullers to make significant extra income.
Nevadan Bob Howell put on major cash tournaments in Reno throughout the ‘80s, and in 1982 and 1983 it is believed his contests more money than all others. An accomplished competitor and well-respected promoter, his events always attracted athletes from across North America.
After two years of AAA Stand-Up Nationals without prize money, significant cash prizes were up for grabs in 1984 and 1985, to the tune of almost $15,000. There were also significant cash prizes at the 1986 Stand-Up Nationals, but these were eclipsed by the massive Over the Top World Championships. The total value of cash prizes given out at this event would not be surpassed until 26 years later (taking inflation into account, it would take 29 years). But Over the Top continues to hold the record for the most valuable prize ever awarded in the sport: a Volvo White Semi Truck, worth north of $100,000.

The Over the Top World Championships was a one-time event, and it left a considerable void during the years following the movie’s release. Between 1987 and 1989, the biggest cash events were different each year. It wasn’t until Yukon Jack, brand of Canadian whiskey liqueur, came onto the scene as a major event sponsor that the sport’s top competitors had an annual event on which to really focus. Yukon Jack would remain the biggest deal in the sport through 1996.
With Yukon Jack no longer sponsoring professional armwrestling event following the 1996 Finals, a new big-money tournament emerged in Idaho. The Main Event, first held in 1997, offered almost all of the weight classes offered at the World Armwrestling Federation (WAF) World Championships. And there were significant cash prizes in every class, both left and right! Cash prizes actually increased for the second year (to $38,000 overall) but a one-time event in the Caribbean gave out even more money that year!
In 1999, the biggest cash tournament was actually a special sub-tournament held in conjunction with the WAF World Championships in Japan. At the conclusion of the Championships, each country could enter two of its athletes in a special single open right hand class to determine the overall absolute champion. Top finishers in this special class divided $10,000 in prize money.
In 2000, Mike Bowling held the inaugural Harley Pull (also known as The Best in the Midwest). Including the Harley Sportster, the total value of prizes given out at that event was the highest of that year. But in terms of actual cash prizes, the event that gave out the most was the USWA/USAA National Pro-Am Armwrestling Championship, which had been held annually in Lake Tahoe since 1994.
Professional armwrestling benefitted from a new corporate sponsor in 2001: sports supplements company GNC. Similar to the formula used by Yukon Jack, qualifying tournaments were held in various parts of the country, culminating in a year-end championship with large cash prizes up for grabs. GNC continued to sponsor the sport through 2004, and three times had the distinction of being the sponsor of the biggest cash tournament of the year.

The Arnold Classic Armwrestling Challenge, an event first held in 1998 whose cash prize purse grew every year into the 21st century, actually offered the same amount of prize money as the GNC Championships in 2002 and 2003. The spread worked out nicely for the athletes, as the Arnold was held in late winter and the GNC was usually held in early fall.
John Burgeson established himself as a big-time promoter during the 2000s. In 2004 he organized his biggest tournament to date: the West Coast Pro/Am Armwrestling Championship, which also included the 2nd annual John Brzenk Challenge that had $3,000 up for grabs for the first person to pin Brzenk (it didn’t happen). Mr. Burgeson also held the second biggest prize money tournament of 2004 just two months later: the Ultimate Armwrestling tournament in Las Vegas. This event was held annually three years in a row and it was the biggest cash event 2005 and 2006. 2005 was the peak year, in terms of overall participation. Dave Devoto, of Petaluma World Wristwrestling Championship fame, teamed up with John and his Professional Armwrestling Conference to put on the biggest event of the decade (excluding the WAF World Championships). With big money and national television coverage on Fox Sports, it had the right mix of elements to attract most of the top North American pullers, as well as some of the best pullers from around the world.

The Ruler of the Nation (ROTN) was the top money event in 2007 and 2008. The brainchild of ArmTV’s Gary Roberts, along with the financial backing of Don Fritsche, combined for a well-hyped event. A little extra excitement was created for the 2008 event by awarding an extra $1,000 the winner of the class with the most competitors.
2009 marked the first year that the title of biggest cash event was set by a tournament held outside of North America. The Nemiroff World Cup, also known as the Zloty Tur, had been what was widely recognized as the most professionally organized annual pro tournament in the world for almost 10 years before its cash prize purse exceeded all other tournaments. Usually held in Warsaw, Poland, the event always drew many of the very best European armwrestlers, and usually a handful of the top Americans as well.
After three years of holding the top spot, another European tournament began offering more money – significantly more. The A1 Russian Open became the first event to offer in excess of $100,000 in prize money – the total purse being $113,000. The very best pullers from Europe and Asia attended, as well as a few top American pullers. The contest would remain the top cash event through 2014.

The World Armwrestling League (WAL) was formed in 2014, and by 2015 it had blown away the record for the biggest cash prize purse in history. A total of $308,000 was awarded at the 2015 Championships. The WAL easily kept the title of biggest cash event in 2016.
Following five years during which almost $1,000,000 was given out at the top events, cash prizes came back down to more recognizable levels in 2017. The Zloty Tur, always an elite-level event, once again was the biggest prize money tournament of the year.
The 2010s finished off with two huge money events in different parts of the world: the Moldova Armwrestling Open Cup 2 in 2018 and the D1 China Open in 2019.
The COVID-19 pandemic hit the world hard in 2020, cancelling virtually all major tournaments. For this reason, the biggest cash prize purse dropped to a level not seen in over 30 years. But the one-time Mr. Olympia Power Armwrestling Championship made a splash in late 2021 and a new league emerged shortly after in Russia. The Absolute Men's Championship (AMC) league became the latest organization to lead the way in professional tournament armwrestling.

List of Top Cash Events By Year
It is important to note the following, when examining this list:
This list is assumed to be correct, based on my research. If there is believed to be a mistake, please contact me. Also, a few champion names are missing from some of the events. If you are able to fill in some of the blanks, please let me know!
- Amounts listed are in US Dollars and have not been adjusted for inflation.
- In some years, other events offered total prizes valued at a high amount than some of the events listed below. (For example, awards, jewelry, televisions, trips, etc.) The events listed here are the ones known to have offered the greatest amounts in cash.
- Cash prizes associated with super-matches (i.e. special invitational one-on-one match-ups) are not included in the listed totals.
- Special closed tournaments not open to armwrestlers are not included in this list. For example, the 1975 NFLPA Arm Wrestling Championship had a total cash prize purse of $44,000, but only professional football players could take part.
- The list only includes tournaments where cash prizes were actually paid out (or at least the prizes were available to be paid out). In some years, there were tournaments that were promoted as offering even bigger cash prize purses, only to have the promoter or sponsor renege on commitments.
